MUST-SEE LIST
Offense: Clairemont WR Chris Kelly ran a 4.49 40.
Defense: Coronado’s Ryan Halverson is a premier DE.
Game: Coronado at Clairemont, Oct. 12, 6:30 p.m.
•?Teams in predicted order of finish.
CORONADO
Last year: 9-4
Coach: Tony Isabella, 2nd year
Key players: Robbie Weissenfels (QB), Jack Perkins (WR-LB), Colin Sweeney (WR-LB), Matt Halverson (RB-DB), Mason Copp (RB-LB), Tyree Johnson (WR-DB), Monti Daniels (OL-DL), Carson Cavner (OL-DL), Colton Cavner (OL-DL), Garrett Kobana (OL-LB), Ryan Halverson (TE-LB), Landry Urbanowicz (DL).
Scouting report: First year was a success for Isabella so there is no reason to believe there will be a drop-off. Weissenfels was a backup last year as a soph, but he has lots of help with three WRs, a TE and some beef up front led by the Cavner brothers, Carson (6-2, 240) and Colton (6-2, 210). Ryan Halverson (6-3, 220) is the goods.
CLAIREMONT
Last year: 3-7
Coach: Ron Gladnick, 1st year
Key players: Chris Kelly (WR-LB), Jesus Barreras (OL-DL), Rees Freeman (DL), Bridger Gerstenslager (WR-FS), Martin Gonzalez (OL-DL), Gage Miller (OL-LB), Justin Romero (WR-DB), Steven Rodriguez (OL-DE), Nick Espinoza (RB-DB), Justin Ramsey (RB-LB).
Scouting report: The first thing Gladnick, a former assistant at Torrey Pines who brought two Falcons aides with him, said is that he’s at Clairemont for the long run. Has a nice start with Kelly, who ran a 4.49 at the USC camp. Two other WRs return so QB Jason Mos has targets. Ramsey is a 6-1, 215-pound Texas transfer.
CHRISTIAN
Last year: 10-3
Coach: Matt Oliver, 13th year
Key players: Rayvon Owens (RB-LB), Tyler Leslie (OL-DL), Zane Coffman (RB-DB), Jack Vanderbilt (OL-DL), Phillip George (WR-DB), Trenton Sauls (TE-LB), Stephen Johnston (TE-LB), Paris Miller (RB-DB).
Scouting report: No shortage of running backs for last year’s Division V champions who graduated 14 key seniors. Move to this league might actually make life easier for the Patriots who come from the Coastal League. QB is the big question but maybe Oliver will just run the Wildcat every down.
UNIVERSITY CITY
Last year: 3-7
Coach: Eric Perry, 1st year
Key players: Alexander Simpson (RB-DB), Victor Trujillo (OL-DL), Abe Jimenez (RB-LB), Nico Jacobo (OL-LB), Ben Whitney (OL-LB), Kyle LeBlanc (WR-DB), Devante Pritchett (WR-DB), Daniel Tsai (OL-DL), Marcus Avelino (RB-DB), Darion Bell (WR-DB), Dominic Lewis (QB-DB), Anthony Tabiendo (OL-LB), Greg Heath (LB).
Scouting report: The Centurions have a new coach, a new all-weather field and permanent lights for the first time in school history. But will they win? Simpson is an outstanding athlete with track speed and Trujillo at 6-2, 275 is an anchor on the line. Depth may be a problem so the Centurions need to stay healthy.
CRAWFORD
Last year: 1-9
Coach: Michael Wright, 1st year
Key players: Luis Martinez (OL-DL), Diego Cruz (OL-DL), Joseph Torres (TE-LB), Abdi Musa (RB-DB).
Scouting report: Wright helped build the program back to respectability at Hoover but might have an even bigger challenge at a school that lacks recent tradition, has low turnout and needs an infusion of wins to be more competitive. Martinez, an all-leaguer as a soph, leads the way.
