OCEAN VIEW CHRISTIAN
Last year: 7-3
Coach: Ron Loewenthal, 2nd year
Key players: Josh Smith (RB-LB), Raul Rodriguez (RB-LB), Josh Ollier (OL-LB), Ulyses Lujano (DL-OL), Andres Perez (QB-S), Danny Smith (WR-CB), Tyler Ramsey (WR), Daniel Ramirez (DL).
Scouting report: Rodriguez is the other potent threat in the Patriots’ ground game. He carried for 612 yards and nine scores as the Patriots outscored opponents 400-172. Perez completed 40 passes for 494 yards and seven TDs. Six of eight starters return on offense and defense. “Our weak area is passing, both on offense and defense,” said Loewenthal. “But we really execute in the offensive line to key the running game.”
Last year: 1-6
Coach: Wally Zittle, 4th year
Key players: Matt Evans (MLB-WR), Greg Rincon (QB-LB), Alex Smith (NG-C), Frankie Diaz (RB-LB), David Bacerra (RB-DE), Daniel Streamer (DB-LB-RB), Jon Adams (WR), Juan Torres (TE-DL), Dave Roberts (WR).
Scouting report: The Wildcats continue to rebuild, following that 9-1 Citrus title in 2010. Zittle, who is 12-15 overall in three seasons, will feature Streamer (547 yards, 10.3 per carry) and Diaz (57, 5.7) in the running game. Rincon, who last fall averaged 25 yards on a team-high seven receptions as a wideout, steps into the QB breach. “Still a young team,” said Zittle. “We’re building for 2013, when we will add 12 to 14 freshmen to the varsity.”
Last year: 0-6
Coach: Tom Davis, 1st year
Key players: Corey Clow (WB-DB), Gabe Wester (FB-LB), Patrick Pacleb (LB-TE), Nareg Shakarian (QB), Jerry Gambrell (WR), Nick Voss (OG).
Scouting report: In taking the Crusaders’ helm, Davis listed experience on an 18-man squad as a strength “due to underclassmen getting significant playing time last season.” Wester, Clow and Pacleb are four-year participants due for “breakout seasons,” added Davis. “We’ve got to stay focused when adverse situations come up this season.” The 2011 unit was outscored 350-54, with the closest loss 28-20 to Calvary Christian.
Last year: 0-6
Coach: Ron Allen, 1st year
Key players: Jose Banuelos (RB-WR-K), Jordan Kirby (QB-TE-DE), Conor Coester (QB), Nick Taylor (RB), James Zabel (OL-DL), Ryan Philpot (NG), Noah Henkell (LB), Kevin Rasmussen (TE-OT), Justin Garner (WR), Joel Bonilla (WR).
Scouting report: Allen, who once played in the NFL and World Football League, takes the helm of a program that went 5-4 in 2007, but 0-22 since and even took a hiatus two years ago. “My expectation is we’ll be competitive in every game this season,” said Allen, perhaps mindful that the 2011 Knights were outscored 354-38. “We hope to play a game or two of 11-man football at the end of the season and move to full 11-man in 2013.” Player to watch: Taylor, a freshman, runs 4.7 in the 40.
