Solid nucleus returns for Valley Center


Offense: Valley Center WR Michael McInerny offers a 6-foot-4 target as he bids for repeat all-section honors.

Defense: Del Norte LB Spenser Pennington, who first joined the varsity as a freshman, enters his junior year coming off an all-league season.

Game: Valley Center at Mt. Carmel, Oct. 19, 7 p.m.

Last year: 12-1

Coach: Rob Gilster, 14th year

Key players: Sean Cutrell (OL), Torrey Denver (OL), Dylan Fredenberg (DL-TE), Cody Gearhart (HB-DB), Ryan Kleiman (QB), Michael McInerny (WR-K), Matt Preston (LB-TE), Anthony Ricks (DB-WR), Jose Torres (DL), Shaun Woods (OLB-TE).

Scouting report: The Jaguars go for a repeat Division IV championship with a solid nucleus back. Kleiman and McInerny form a top-flight aerial combination to go with a traditionally sound running game. The defense counts on the solid secondary duo of Gearhart and Ricks, while Preston holds forth at LB.


Last year: 6-5

Coach: John Anderson, 2nd year

Key players: Deion Alston (WR-DB), Michael Chevalier (OL-DL), Riley Coniglio (FB-S), Kory Fox (QB-DB), Davion Fuller (RB-DB), Robbie Halliburton (RB-DB), Billy Ray Hunt (RB-LB), Garrett Kay (OL-DL), Peter Pavilando (OL-DL), Art Turner (FB-LB).

Scouting report: All-league choices Coniglio and Halliburton fuel the rushing attack for the Sundevils, who are rebuilding the offensive line as well as the defensive front due to graduation. At the offensive controls is Fox, a standout defensive back last season. Fuller adds two-way depth following a strong sophomore campaign.


Last year: 4-7

Coach: Leigh Cole, 2nd year

Key players: Mike DiPrima (OL-DL), Adam Joyce (OL-LB), George Liang (RB-LB), Andrew Hunt (OLB), Rafael Martirosyan (OL-Dl), Isaiah McDonald (QB), Spenser Pennington (TE-LB), Antony Toia (LB), Chad Wetzel (WR-S), Patrick Zeller (WR-RB).

Scouting report: The Nighthawks benefit from experienced seniors who comprised the first freshmen class at the fourth-year school. Joyce, Liang and Pennington each bring all-league credentials to the linebacking corps. On offense, Zeller has twice earned all-league honors at WR entering his junior season. DiPrima holds forth up front.

Coach: Jason Texler, 1st year

Key players: Richard Carter (OL-LB), Tyler Chesus (OL-DL), Jason Foster (LB-TE), Isiah Hennie (WR-DB), Kyle Lewis (WR-DB), Cory McKesson (RB-S), Drew Olson (QB), MacIntyre Peek (S-WR), Zachary Simmons (OL-DL), Trevor Waite (DB-WR).

Scouting report: Texler, who coached the previous two seasons at Escondido, comes to San Marcos with the four-receiver attack used by El Cajon Valley to reach the 2005 section finals during his tenure there. Prime targets figure to be Hennie and Waite with Olson at QB. Carter anchors the line.

Coach: Kris Plash, 6th year

Key players: Neil Bonahoom (LB), Austin Early (QB), Adam Hernandez (SB-LB), Jacob Krummel (NG), Dominic Quinonez (HB), D’Andre Saxton (DE), Mario Soria (RB), Josh Spina (CB-WR), Joth White (DL).

Scouting report: The Patriots count on Early, an all-league quarterback, who is also a standout in basketball and baseball. The attack gets further spark from Hernandez, who adds slotback duties while staying a defensive mainstay. Bonahoom also keys the defense after missing last season due to a back injury.
