Madison counting on Cormier to lead offense

Offense: Madison’s Pierre Cormier carrying the football.

Defense: Point Loma’s Jamal Agnew zeroing in on a tackle.

Game: The Shoe Game, La Jolla at Point Loma, Oct. 12, 6:30 p.m.

•?Teams in predicted order of finish.

Last year: 10-1-1

Coach: Rick Jackson, 9th year

Key players: Pierre Cormier (RB), Samo Savusa (OL-DL), Michael Garner (WR), Devin Tomlinson (OL), Jamie Gomez (LB), Anthony Bryant (DB-WR), Lee Walker (WR-CB), Sam Vermillion (OL-DL), Keoni Kanoa (LB-OL), Kamden Valencia (LB), Teddy Duenez (DE), Anthony Herrera (K).

Scouting report: In Cormier, the Warhawks have a running back who gained 1,471 yards and scored 14 TDs. Since no one on the roster has thrown a varsity pass, guess what the Warhawks plan to do. With a line that includes veterans Tomlinson (6-3, 285), Vermillion (6-4, 245) and Savusa (6-1, 250), that seems like a good idea.

Last year: 8-3-1

Coach: Mike Hastings, 15th year

Key players: Zach Eischen (WR-SS), Jamal Agnew (RB-CB), Weston Huff (OL-DL), D.J. Lacy (RB-DB), Raymond Goncalves (WR-DB), Tanner Mannion (LB), Sydney Rush (RB-DB), Armando Smith (FS-RB), Branson Martin (QB), Sam Augustine (QB), Steven Arreola (OL-DL), Jovanny Sanchez (OL-DL), Jake Wambaugh (TE-DE), Greg Verdugo (LB).

Scouting report: With 14 returning starters, the Pointers, who were co-league champs a year ago, figure to be in the mix. Augustine and Martin shared QB duties last year, but Hastings, who won his 100th game in 2011, is looking for one to take control. Arreola (6-2, 285), Sanchez (6-2, 235) and Wambaugh (6-3, 250) key the line.

Last year: 5-6

Coach: Willie Matson, 8th year

Key players: Donshay Bandy (TE-LB), Aaron Cobbler (OL-DL), Dylan Lieto (LB-FB), Kelly Weese (TE), Devante Kinder (RB), Jordan Ordaz (OL), Isaac Mendez (OL), Nick Vargas (OL), Edwin Romero (DL), T.J. Gatdoar (DL), Rodney Dantzler (DB), Airric Parker (DB), Franklin Gaylord (WR).

Scouting report: Even with a very young team the Bucs made the playoffs last year. All-league players like Cobbler (6-4, 205), Bandy (6-2, 212) and Lieto (6-0, 190) are providing leadership while newcomers Andres Petties-Wilson and Nick Plum battle it out at the QB position. With eight returning starters on defense, look for the Bucs to try to keep the scores down.

Last year: 3-8

Coach: Rey Hernandez, 4th year

Key players: Cameron Baggett (DL), William Geary (LB), Conor Irwin (RB), Kenneth Martey (RB), David McColl (QB-DB), Dylan Walsh (SS), Thad Lewis (OL-DL), Thomas Graham (OL-DL), Justin Cook (TE), Billy Penny (WR).

Scouting report: With All-league running back Martey (815 yards, 5 TDs) heading up the Wing-T offense, the Vikings are optimistic heading into the season. There has to be concern up front. Only Baggett (6-2, 225) possesses much size. The defense will be led by undersized but ball-hawking linebacker Geary.

Last year: 8-3

Coach: Kenny Nears, 3rd year

Key players: Steven Todd (RB-LB), David Moa (OL-DE), Luis Cazares (TE-DE), Shawn Hall (QB), Michael Green (WR-DB), Josh Ross (DB), Deouche Wicker (OL-DL).

Scouting report: Winning the Central League got the Komets moved back to the Western League, ready or not. Though 21 seniors graduated, the success last year produced a turnout of more than 70 prospects, including last year’s backup QB Hall and starting WR Green. Todd (5-9, 210), Moa (6-3, 250) and Cazares (6-3, 225) are solid.
