U-T San Diego's top high school performers

Basketball | Cathedral Catholic

Michel, a 6-foot-1 senior guard, led the top-ranked Dons over parochial school rival St. Augustine 67-64 in the Western League opener for both schools. Michel led the Dons with 24 points, hitting 6 of 7 from 3-point range.

Kandiss Barber

Basketball | Mater Dei Catholic

Playing against Las Vegas Bishop Gorman in the Mount Miguel Showcase, the 5-foot-10 junior had a 21-point, 13-rebound double-double in leading the Crusaders to victory. Playing a challenging schedule, Mater Dei improved to 8-7.

Connor Anderson

Wrestling | La Costa Canyon

Anderson, a senior, was named Upper Weights MVP at the Rim of the World Tournament after winning the 170-pound class. He was one of six La Costa Canyon weight champions as the Mavericks won the team title.

Ali Englehardt

Basketball | Mt. Carmel

The 6-foot sophomore forward led the Sundevils to a 3-1 record last week, scoring 23 points in a 71-42 win over M.E. LaZerte (Canada), 25 points in a 59-40 win over Oceanside and 20 points in a 44-43 win over Temecula Great Oak.

Ryan Pineda

Basketball | Westview

The senior hit a long 3-pointer at the end of regulation to tie the game against Mission Hills and send the nonleague contest into overtime. The Wolverines pulled off a 69-67 upset of the Grizzlies behind Pineda’s 21 points.

Devin Watson

Basketball | Army-Navy

The junior averaged 31 points and 5.7 assists as the Warriors finished second in the Foothill Holiday Classic in Las Vegas. Army-Navy’s wins included a 77-71 triumph over Denver East in which Watson scored a career-high 43 points.

Sheila Gerrity

Water polo | Bishop’s

The Knights senior co-captain shut down some of the best players in the state as Bishop’s downed Dos Pueblos and Oxnard before falling to Newport Harbor. She had eight assists, 12 steals and four drawn ejections.

Tom Erb

Basketball | Poway

The 5-foot-9 junior guard needed every one of his career-high 36 points to help lift the Titans to a 92-86 double-overtime victory over Sweetwater in a nonleague match in the Poway gym.

High school Athletes of the Week are recognized through a partnership between U-T San Diego and the San Diego Hall of Champions.
