Planted on one knee, a Pacific Ridge player flashed two fingers in front of a photographer waiting at midfield.
“What are you doing?” his teammate asked. “We’re not the number two team as your hands imply. We’re number one.”
Chuckling, the boy responded: “Duh. But we repeated. The number two is supposed to mean we’re back-to-back champions.”
The top-seeded Firebirds (12-10-2) cruised to the San Diego Section Division V title, defeating Calvin Christian 4-0 Saturday at Mesa College.
“Our movement off the ball was fantastic,” said Pacific Ridge coach David Boyett. “The boys have such great vision and found the open player with ease to create some opportunities and converted.”
Sam Carney, Hugo Curiel, Ari Cohen and Jack Long all contributed goals for the Firebirds, who built a two-goal cushion against Calvin Christian (16-4-3) at the half.
“This one for sure,” Carney said. “Last year’s championship was awesome, no doubt, but this one means the most to me because it’s my first year as captain.”
