Last year: 1-8
Coach: Andy Macuga, 1st year
Key players: Mason Chell (LB-RB), Jordan Thompson (RB-DB), Cody Porter (RB-WR-LB), Gunner Van Sickle (QB), Maui Polanco (TE-LB), Jose Arias (LB-OL), Michael Manzano (RB-DB), Silvestre Arias (LB), Alan Garcia (DB).
Scouting report: An off-campus coach who owns a local restaurant, Macuga inherits a program that has lurched to 13 wins, 44 losses and a tie since its last winning season (8-3) in 2006. “The biggest challenge is creating stability,” Macuga said. “Creating not just a team, but a football program.” The 2012 Rams bested Julian 33-20 in the opener, then lost eight straight. With only four players weighing at least 200 pounds, this squad must rely on speed and quickness. Chell figures to enjoy a stellar senior season, having earned all-league honors as a sophomore (second team) and junior (first team), when his 29 tackles led the team. Thompson was second with 27 tackles, besides leading the team in rushing (177 yards on 33 carries) and receiving (18 catches, 129 yards). Van Sickle should build on a sophomore season that netted 62 completions for 626 yards.
