Last year: 9-3
Coach: Tom Karlo, 2nd year
League: Grossmont Hills
Key players: Anthony Lawrence (QB), J.T. Barnes (WR-K), Christian Brooks (WR), Logan Candelario (OL), Christian Meno (DB), Justin Peace (DL), Josh Anderson (RB-WR), Kalvin Waters (DL), Brad Boyce (OL), Samson Serrano (OL).
Scouting report: The Foothillers will count on Lawrence, an All-San Diego Section passer who threw for 3,480 yards and 36 touchdowns last season. Lawrence also rushed for 270 yards and two TDs. Brooks is the top returning receiver with 810 yards on 64 receptions and eight touchdowns. Barnes, who handled much of the kicking duties a year ago, also figures in the passing game with 54 catches for 611 yards and eight touchdowns. The Foothillers are well-stacked on the line, led by Candelario, Boyce and Serrano. Newcomer Dustin Dinns (6-3, 290) will also bolster the offensive front along with Tariq Boutros (6-1, 270). Grossmont must rebuild on the defensive side with Peace, Waters and Chaz Cadwalader. Linebackers Tyler Millican, Anthony Rios and Donald Bloodworth will anchor the middle. Christian Meno, Perry Sherrod, Averi Smith and Ryan Marchand will make up the secondary. Lawrence, Barnes and Brooks are all being heavily recruited. “We’re big and athletic on the offensive line but very inexperienced,” Karlo said. “Our defense is young, but we have lots of competition and depth. If our youth can put it together early, we could be a talented team.”
