Receiver Calvin Crockett scores on a 53-yard pass play in the final seconds.

A tumultuous, stressful week littered with controversy ended in a dramatic, last-second triumph for Serra. With 2.7 seconds remaining, Conquistadors quarterback Hunter Correll heaved a prayer toward the end zone.

“I saw the ball, waited for it, judged it right and it fell into my hands,” said Serra receiver Calvin Crockett, who scored on the 53-yard catch, sealing a 21-15 win over Morse. “I just had to get it done somehow.”

Earlier in the week, Serra coach Brian Basteyns made national headlines when appearing in blackface at a Halloween party, prompting an investigation that resulted in a two-day suspension without pay.

“Mentally, it was tough for us, all of the adversity and distractions, but our weekly Bible talk kept us together,” Correll said.

Minutes before the TD heave, it appeared Morse would win following running back KB Barbee’s 25-yard touchdown run that provided the Tigers with an eight-point cushion before the extra point at the 1:47 mark. However, Morse’s decision to try a two-point conversion backfired, giving Serra an opportunity to tie the game.

Serra scored on a 50-yard touchdown pitch-and-catch before Correll walked into the end zone for the game-tying conversion. Then Serra received the second opportunity via an interception at midfield.
