Eagles finally take advantage of opportunities

Midway through the first half, Gompers Prep Academy threatened on four occasions, penetrating Crawford’s back line as they created chances to break a nil-nil score.

One grazed the right post, ricocheting out of bounds. The Colts’ keeper snatched a second, followed by punching out a third. And the fourth ascended over the crossbar.

Opportunities squandered.

The top-seeded Eagles wouldn’t encroach the box again the remainder of the half. It mattered not, though.

Gompers Prep Academy split the posts via a rocket from distance, which clenched a 2-0 victory against No. 2 Crawford and the CIF Section Division V boys soccer championship at Clairemont High Friday night.

“I’m not really sure what or how it happened,” said senior forward Rogelio Velenzuela of his goal. “I just shot it and it somehow went in.”

It’s the first soccer title in program history for Gompers Prep Academy (18-0-1), who eased past Chula Vista Learning Center and Mission Vista in the postseason to remain undefeated.

In the 32nd minute, Velenzeula took a pass and surveyed the field before muscling off the game-winning dagger from 28 yards out. The curling ball arched over several defenders and descended into the back of the net over the outstretched hands of Crawford’s keeper.

Trailing, Crawford (11-7-4) secured two set free kicks yards north of the box in the second half, but couldn’t equalize on either set piece, preserving the clean sheet for Eagles sophomore keeper Sergio Castillo.

Junior forward Jose Alvarado added a second goal in injury time.
