Escondido, Fallbrook, Orange Glen, San Pasqual, Valley Center

San Pasqual fans had plenty to cheer about last season.

Last year: 2-8

Coach: Steve Bridges, 3rd year

Division: II

Key players: Josh Navarro (RB), Quentin Todd (WR), JD Fox (QB), Sam Grimes (QB), Jorge Rodriguez (OL), Austin Rieman (DB), Jason Montville (LB), Enrique Manzo (OL), Frank Medrano (OL), Alex Corona (OL).

Scouting report: Navarro is a star, accounting for nearly 2,000 yards total offense — 1,423 rushing. Todd is a top-notch receiver with 25 catches and seven TDs. Fox and Grimes are locked in a QB battle. Fox is an outstanding, three-sport athlete. Grimes was the starting QB on the JV team. Montville is a returning starter, who is being recruited in baseball. Rodriguez plays football at 210 pounds, but was an outstanding wrestler at 195. Manzo is also a top-notch wrestler. Rieman is a returning starter and anchors the secondary. Corona and Medrano were the best OL on the JV team.

Last year: 3-8

Coach: Kyle Williams, 2nd year

Division: III

Key players: Sierra Arteaga (DB), Landon Benner (QB), Roberto Ramirez (RB-DB), Trevor Rainwater (WR-DB), Alex McCarty (OL-LB), Nathan Montgomery (OL-DE), Steven Branham (RB-LB), Matt May (OL-DL), Enrique Barreto (RB-LB).

Scouting report: Since 2004, the Warriors are 22-83-1. With 14 returning starters — seven on offense — and in the second year under Williams and a year more experienced in the wing-T, this could be the year things turn around. Benner will run the offense, but his line isn’t big. Defense is where the Warriors should shine. Montgomery and May anchor the line while McCarty and Branham head a very talented LB group. Branham is a member of the U-18 National Rugby Team. In the secondary, Arteaga and Ramirez are returning all-leaguers. The team’s biggest weakness could be depth with only 35 players on the varsity.

Last year: 2-8

Coach: Jason Patterson, 1st year

Division: IV

Key players: Richard Barry (RB-LB), Daniel Bonahoom (RB-LB), Luis Mendoza (OL), Ricky Mercado (OL), Christian Morales (QB-DB), Aaron Palomino (LB), Roger Rickman (RB), Santiago Rocha (QB-LB), Ernesto Vega (OL-DL), Jaelan Walker (FB).

Scouting report: With Mendoza (6-1, 285), Mercado (5-11, 290) and Vega (5-11, 310), the Patriots are big up front. So the offense will change to a double-wing, double-tight end, which is designed to line up, run the ball and knock the defense off the line. Rickman, who is coming off a knee injury, is as good a back as there is in the county when he’s healthy. He averaged 6.4 yards on 75 carries before he was hurt. Barry, Bonahoom and Walker will also carry the offensive load. Rocha and Morales are battling for the QB spot. Both will play defense. With Barry, Bonahoom, Rocha and Palomino, OG should have active LBs.

Last year: 11-2

Coach: Tony Corley, 8th year

Division: I

Key players: Devin Stanley (QB), Max Garzone (LB), Tate Johnson (OL), Austin Cappellette (DB), Tatum Blakeney (DL), Colton Christofferson (WR), Cole Cucinella (OL), Chad Nelson (RB), Anthony Bobadilla (RB), Zach Eldridge (LB).

Scouting report: Only two starters return from an 11-2 season and a loss to Cathedral Catholic in the San Diego Section Division I championship game. The Eagles have to replace 21 seniors. Johnson returns to anchor the OL and is a big man at 6-1, 270. The OL should be a team strength with Roberts and Cucinella. Stanley, who was a WR a year ago, moves to QB and has shown flashes of brilliance. The always-disciplined Eagles may have some growing pains early in the season in a brutal non-league schedule. The hope is the new starters mature by the start of league play and make a run for the title.

Last year: 3-7

Coach: Rob Gilster, 16th year

Division: II

Key players: Jared Gilster (RB-DB), John Cabrera (DB), John Lucas (TE-ILB), Daniel DeLeon (QB), Rhett Reilly (WR-DB), Jacob Newman (WR-OLB-PK), Jake Salaheddine (TE-ILB), Kyle Morgan (OL), August Fluegge (TE-ILB), Chance Plash (WR-DB), Ricky Mendoza (OL), Jake Glennie (OL).

Scouting report: The Jaguars were 86-11-2 in the nine years before last season’s stumble, including a 46-6 run from 2008-11. The team returns 11 starters from last year’s team, including DeLeon, who at 6-foot-4 is drawing attention at QB from colleges. Gilster returns at RB while Lucas, Salaheddine, Steven Much and Fluegge give the Jags great depth at TE. The lines lack depth, but Morgan (6-3, 280) and Glennie (6-2, 255) give those areas some bulk. Morgan is on the radar of several colleges. Lucas, Newman, Salaheddine and Fluegge also form an athletic LB corps.
