Jaylon Candler tries to break a tackle for Chula Vista, which plays Sweetwater on Friday night.

COMPLETE FRIDAY SCHEDULE

++++ KIRK KENNEY'S PICKS ++++

CHULA VISTA at SWEETWATER

The county’s longest continuous rivalry is renewed for the 68th straight year. Undefeated Sweetwater leads the series 37-27-3, including last year’s 27-0 win.

Prediction: Sweetwater 30, Chula Vista 18.

HELIX at CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC

No. 1-ranked Helix opened the season with two big wins and had a week off to prepare for this game. Fifth-ranked Cathedral Catholic, coming off an 8-7 win over Torrey Pines, is still searching for its identity.

Prediction: Helix 34, Cathedral 16.

RANCHO BERNARDO at LC CANYON

RB has averaged 43 points a game in its three victories, but La Costa Canyon represents an entirely different challenge. The Broncos appear to have the offensive talent and balance to prevail in a close game.

Prediction: Rancho Bernardo 28, La Costa Canyon 27.

MISSION BAY at PATRICK HENRY

Three interceptions in the fourth quarter derailed Patrick Henry last week against Granite Hills, but Patriots QB Cruz Samaniego should bounce back this week. Mission Bay, which was off last week, will need to control the ball on the ground to have any chance.

Prediction: Patrick Henry 40, Mission Bay 12.

MOUNT MIGUEL at MONTE VISTA

Mount Miguel stumbled in last week’s 16-6 loss to Otay Ranch but should get back on track against a Monte Vista team that has lost two straight. Matadors won last year 35-12.

Prediction: Mount Miguel 35, Monte Vista 14.

CALEXICO at MONTGOMERY

Calexico won last year’s meeting 35-25 as both schools went on to four-win seasons. The situation seems similar this year, the score perhaps closer because Montgomery is playing at home.

Prediction: Calexico 28, Montgomery 21.

VISTA at CARLSBAD

Carlsbad is coming off blowout wins over Lincoln and Santa Fe Christian that lifted the Lancers to a No. 9 ranking. Vista has lost two straight but challenged itself with games against Eastlake and Steele Canyon.

Prediction: Carlsbad 17, Vista 16.

Last week: 6-1. Season: 16-5.

++++ JOHN MAFFEI'S PICKS ++++

FALLBROOK at SAN MARCOS

Fallbrook beat La Jolla last week to get to 3-0 but gave up 52 points to the Vikings. Ranked No. 10, San Marcos has scored 138 points in starting 3-0. Knights QB James Harwell has thrown for 734 yards and 10 TDs.

Prediction: San Marcos 49, Fallbrook 42.

MT. CARMEL at DEL NORTE

The Sundevils are 2-1 after a 28-23 win over Mira Mesa. QB Lucas Johnson has 535 total yards — 369 passing and 166 rushing — and has accounted for seven scores. Del Norte scored 41 last week in a win over Westview after being shut out by RB the week before.

Prediction: Mt. Carmel 28, Del Norte 27.

CLASSICAL at ORANGE GLEN

Classical is 2-0, but its wins are over The Rock and S.D. Calvary Christian. Orange Glen is 3-0 with a new ground-based offense that has produced 117 points.

Prediction: Orange Glen 42, Classical 21.

VALLEY CENTER at IMPERIAL

Valley Center has scored at least 28 points in each of its first three games but is 1-2. Imperial lost to Sweetwater last week to fall to 1-2. Tigers QB Aaron Bonillas has 489 yards total offense, 395 passing.

Prediction: Valley Center 35, Imperial 31.

POWAY at MISSION HILLS

Poway scored late to win its opener but blew leads the last two weeks, losing to Mount Miguel (25-24) and El Camino (21-14). No. 3 Mission Hills has won two straight.

Prediction: Mission Hills 31, Poway 24.

MADISON at EASTLAKE

These are two very good teams with one win between them. Madison has been beaten by El Capitan and St. Augustine. Eastlake, with a win over Vista, has lost to Desert Ridge of Arizona (23-11) and Los Alamitos (17-16). Titans running back Isaiah Strayhorn has rushed for 420 yards on 72 carries. Eastlake is averaging 5.3 yards on 132 rushes.

Prediction: Madison 28, Eastlake 24.

RANCHO BUENA VISTA at STEELE CANYON

RBV is 1-2 with a two-point loss to Poway and a three-point win last week over San Pasqual. Steele Canyon is off to a 3-0 start.

Prediction: Steele Canyon 34, RBV 20.

Last week: 5-2. Season: 14-7.
