VISTA — Tanner Clark has been listed as La Costa Canyon quarterback Duke Mackle’s backup the whole football season, but he’s spent his time at wide receiver.
On Friday, with Mackle on crutches nursing a left leg injury Clark stepped into the breach.
Clark rushed for 74 yards and a 39-yard touchdown and passed for 81 yards, providing just enough offense for the No. 9-ranked Mavericks to post a 17-0 nonleague victory at Vista.
“I knew I had to be ready at any time,” Clark said. “I wasn’t as nervous as I thought I would be. After the first couple of plays, the butterflies went away.
“It was a little weird taking snaps in a game, but once Duke is healthy he’s the starting quarterback.
“I like playing quarterback, but I’ll do anything to win. We’re right where we wanted to be at 4-1.”
La Costa Canyon seemed to set the tempo with a scoring drive on its first possession. Going 71 yards on five plays, the Mavericks scored on Clark’s 39-yard run around the left side for a 7-0 lead with 6:39 left in the quarter.
The Mavs’ defense held Vista to 70 total yards in the first half and just 6 yards after halftime.
LCC added a second TD on Cade Jackson’s 1-yard run in the third quarter and completed the scoring on Jake Koehnke’s 31-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
