Steele Canyon puts up a fight, but Vaqueros QB throws four touchdown passes

— It’s not often Brad Cagle gets outgunned by another quarterback.

It didn’t matter, either.

Cagle did toss four touchdown passes, and El Capitan got big games from Isaiah Capoochia, D.J. Smith and Brad’s brother, Zach Cagle, to pull away from Steele Canyon 49-24 on Friday in the first-ever league contest between these East County powers.

“It’s a big win,” Capoochia said. “They’re a good Division I team so we knew we had to come out hard and finish.”

No. 9 Steele Canyon (6-2, 1-2 Grossmont Hills League) had a 24-21 lead early in the third quarter, but No. 4 El Capitan (8-0, 3-0) scored the final 28 points.

“That’s what this team has been about all season,” El Cap coach Ron Burner said. “These kids are fighters.”

Steele Canyon’s Dominick Wood-Anderson was 17 of 40 passing for 303 yards and two TDs. His only interception was returned 52 yards for a TD by Jarred Turner to finish the scoring.

Cagle, one of the most prolific quarterbacks in San Diego Section history, was “held” to 191 yards. He completed 10 of 18 attempts with two TD passes apiece to Capoochia (four catches, 100 yards) and Zach Cagle — both of his being highlight-reel material.

Smith rushed 22 times for 137 yards, including an 8-yard TD. Capoochia added 84 rushing yards, including a 6-yard TD run.

El Capitan went into its homecoming halftime with a 21-17 lead. The Vaqueros scored on their first possession as Smith rushed in from 8 yards to cap a seven-play, 68-yard drive.

Steele Canyon then went up 14-7. Roosevelt Johnson hauled in a deep sideline pass from Wood-Anderson for a 67-yard TD. Midway through the second quarter, Wood-Anderson ran for an 11-yard TD.

El Cap answered two minutes later as Brad Cagle hit Capoochia on a deep middle seam route for a 69-yard TD.

Alexander Raya kicked a 46-yard field goal for Steele Canyon late in the half.
