Senior quarterback leads way as Vaqueros trying to make school history

— Brad Cagle has all the statistics. Completions (430), yards (7,156), touchdowns (75) — he’s in the top five all-time in each category in the San Diego Section record book. But to truly be considered among the best quarterbacks in section history, Cagle needs a title game.

And now he’s got one. El Capitan derailed Brawley 34-7 in the Division III semifinals Friday night to earn its first berth in a championship game since losing the 1963 title game against Kearny.

Top-seeded El Capitan (12-0) will face No. 3 Rancho Bernardo (10-2) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at Southwestern College looking for its first championship. No. 4 Brawley (10-2) watched its 10-game winning streak evaporate when it could only produce seven first downs.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” Cagle said. “We’ve worked so hard for three years. This is special.”

After tossing an interception on his first attempt, Cagle completed 16 of his next 21 attempts for 292 yards and four touchdowns. Now with 2,233 yards and 20 TD passes, Cagle has three consecutive seasons over 2,000 yards and 20 TDs.

“He’s just a total player,” El Capitan coach Ron Burner said. “He’s a team player. He does whatever it takes to win.”

The Vaqueros dominated the first half, going up 21-0 behind three Cagle TD passes.
