Whither Westview?

Perennial playoff power Westview reigns as the regional Division I champion. The Wolverines bounced back after losing to La Costa Canyon for the first San Diego Section Open Division title last season. Senior Laura Buck helps spearhead the attack, while junior national player Marley Canales may have part-time duty for the third straight season because of other obligations.

Dynamic Dons

Denied Open Division status last season, Cathedral Catholic figures to move up this year in the quest for its fourth consecutive section title. The Dons also are seeking a regional three-peat with a squad that has nine players with college commitments, including fourth-year varsity members Jessica Clegg and Kelsey Irwin. Junior standout Olivia Erlbeck gets a full season to play after transferring last year.

Parker power

Francis Parker steps up to Division I with eligibility for the Open Division and retains the chance for a repeat in the regional Division III championship. Senior Sasha Stephens returns after setting a school record with 44 goals. The Lancers also get a boost from senior defender Amy Brown, who came forward to score 18 last season. Senior Claire Nussbaum and sophomore Erin Shives are also mainstays.

Scripps surging

Scripps Ranch looks poised to challenge in the top echelon. The Falcons reached the section Division I final last season, getting past the quarterfinals for the first time in the prep careers of that team’s seniors. Samantha Staab and Erica Stephan, both seniors, pace the attack with classmate Sydney Wootten back in goal. The Falcons have seven players with college commitments.

Playoff possibilities

Highly regarded Torrey Pines gears up after coming up short of expectations in the section and regional playoffs. Falcons sophomore sensation Catarina Macario has already committed to Cal. Coronado, coming off its fourth section title in five years, takes a step up to Division I this season. Likewise, Chula Vista High Tech (Division II) and Serra (Division III) move higher following title seasons.
