It wasn’t pretty, but Oceanside did just enough and made some big plays at the right times Friday to secure a nonleague win.
The No. 5 Pirates got two late first-half touchdown passes from Robby Beardsley and a 65-yard fumble return for a score from Jake Gerardi with 6:29 left in the fourth quarter to secure a 30-8 victory over San Pasqual.
Oceanside held a one-possession lead until Beardsley’s timely scoop and score with San Pasqual threatening deep in Pirates territory. Jamie Harris fell on another fumble on the Eagles’ next possession, setting up a 4-yard TD run from Niko Mageo (18 carries, 120 yards) that put the game out of reach.
The Pirates (3-1) sputtered on offense early before finding their groove in the closing three minutes of the first half. Beardsley moved Oceanside into the red zone with a 22-yard completion to Mageo over the middle, then hooked up with Azizi Hearn for a 10-yard scoring strike with 2:58 left in the half.
After San Pasqual fumbled the snap attempting to punt on its next possession, Oceanside took advantage of the good field position, with Beardsley hitting Ronan Ivanovich for a 27-yard score that gave Oceanside a 14-8 halftime advantage.
San Pasqual (1-2) totaled 23 offensive yards in the first half, but downed a punt at the Pirates’ 3-yard line late in the first quarter. On the next play, defensive lineman Jaden Pabloff fell on a fumble in the end zone that gave the visitors their only lead
