Tanner Clark and Zachary Goodkin are proving to be quite the one-two punch.
The junior quarterback and running back, respectively, combined for three touchdowns and 303 yards of offense to help lead the 10th-ranked La Costa Canyon High football team to a 27-13 win over No. 4 Rancho Bernardo on Friday night in a nonleague game.
Clark rushed for a pair of touchdowns and threw for 175 yards, while Goodkin had 16 carries for 128 yards and a score on the ground, as the visiting Mavericks won their third straight.
La Costa Canyon scored touchdowns on three of its first four possessions and took an eight-point lead into halftime. The Mavericks (3-1) then leaned on their defense, holding Rancho Bernardo scoreless in the second half. LCC kicker Jake Koehnke connected on field goals of 47 and 38 yards to account for the Mavericks’ six second-half points.
Broncos quarterback Mark Salazar threw for 240 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown pass to Leo Wagner. Wagner finished with nine catches for 118 yards for Rancho Bernardo (3-1).
The Broncos entered the game having allowed just 12 points in their first three games combined, but the Mavericks had 14 points in the first 14 minutes of the game and led 21-13 at halftime.
Goodkin made it 7-0 in the first three minutes, capping a six-play drive by LCC with a 21-yard burst up the sideline.
