Week 5: Prep football predictions

RANCHO BERNARDO at CARLSBAD

Rancho Bernardo (3-1), ranked No. 7 in San Diego, stubbed its toe last week, losing 27-13 to La Costa Canyon. The Broncos have firepower with QB Mark Salazar throwing for 686 yards. Carlsbad (2-2) has won two in a row after losing to Phoenix Brophy Prep and Lincoln. QB Shea Morales leads the Lancers, throwing for 507 yards.

Prediction: Carlsbad 24, Rancho Bernardo 17

VALLEY CENTER at WEST HILLS

Valley Center (2-2) is in a lose-one, win-one mode. QB Rhett Reilly has thrown for 705 yards while RB Andrew Navarro already has 103 carries for 419 yards. West Hills (2-2) has won two in a row. QB Spencer Moyer has 843 total yards — 536 passing — and has accounted for eight TDs.

Prediction: Valley Center 27, West Hills 24

EASTLAKE vs. ST. AUGUSTINE

The Saints (3-1), ranked No. 3, bounced back from a 23-20 loss to unbeaten L.A. Loyola and topped Otay Ranch 41-14 last week. RB Elijah Preston has 733 yards and is averaging 9.5 yards per carry. The Saints have scored at least 41 points in each of their three wins. Eastlake (2-2), ranked No. 8, bounced back from a 56-7 loss to Helix to beat Madison 37-36 last week. The Titans rushed 68 times for 416 yards in that game.

Prediction: St. Augustine 35, Eastlake 21

WESTVIEW at SAN MARCOS

The last time Westview (4-0) won its first five games of the season was 2008, and the Wolverines went on to a 9-3 finish. QB Beau Nelson has thrown for 685 yards. RB AJ Leonard has 399 rushing yards and WR Ben Ratzlaff has 25 catches for 311 yards. The Westview defense has allowed just 17 points. San Marcos (3-1), ranked No. 10, has won three in a row since an opening-week loss to Oceanside. Terrell Burgess has 23 catches for 506 yards. QB Bryson Bolin has thrown for 1,198 yards and 13 TDs.

Prediction: San Marcos 27, Westview 24

STEELE CANYON at OTAY RANCH

Steele Canyon (2-2) rebounded from a 25-24 loss to Granite Hills with a 29-24 win over RBV. Otay Ranch lost to St. Augustine. RB Samuel Stephens has 367 rushing yards for Otay.

Prediction: Otay Ranch 24, Steele Canyon 20

LA JOLLA at CORONADO

Since beating crosstown rival La Jolla Country Day in the season opener, La Jolla (1-3) has been outscored 143-47 in three losses, giving up at least 42 points in all three games. Coronado (3-1) attacks on the ground behind RB Christopher Haas, who has 671 yards and nine TDs. The Islanders have outscored opponents 99-6 since an opening-week loss to El Centro Southwest.

Prediction: La Jolla 35, Coronado 21

KEARNY at MISSION BAY

Kearny (1-3) has lost three in a row since an opening-week win over San Ysidro. QB Lerone Randle has thrown for 403 yards while RB Frank Gallaway has 306 yards. RB-WR Takoda Browne has 280 total yards, but didn’t play last week. Mission Bay (4-0) has outscored opponents 141-46 in rolling up four straight victories.

Prediction: Mission Bay 35, Kearny 14

VALHALLA at PATRICK HENRY

Valhalla (2-1) has bounced back from an opening-week loss to Otay Ranch by beating Granite Hills and Mar Vista. Henry (2-2) lost to El Capitan last week. QB John Demos has thrown for 836 yards and 10 TDs. WRs Kreig Corkill and Dominick Silvels both have more than 300 receiving yards.

Prediction: Valhalla 27, Henry 14

SCRIPPS RANCH at MIRA MESA

Scripps Ranch opened the season with a pair of wins but dropped a 27-24 decision to Bonita Vista last week. Mira Mesa (3-1) has wins over Mt. Carmel and Morse since being shut out by El Camino three weeks ago.

Prediction: Mira Mesa 31, Scripps Ranch 28

GRANITE HILLS at HOOVER

Granite Hills (2-1) had a bye last week. QB Jacob Siegfried has thrown just 24 passes but for 238 yards. WR Riley Reyes has five catches for 178 yards. RBs Thomas Youmog and Lyndon Franklin have 230 and 199 yards, respectively. Hoover also had a bye last week after getting beaten up 52-12 at La Costa Canyon. Demontauz Gray has 583 rushing yards, but he and QB Lewis Butler were hurt in the LCC game. Hoover has rushed 86 times this season for 866 yards.

Prediction: Granite Hills 31, Hoover 24

Last week: 8-2. Season: 30-10.
