— Rancho Bernardo made the touchback on kickoffs work in the Broncos’ favor.

Four times Friday night, No. 7-ranked Rancho Bernardo posted 80-yard touchdown drives to help turn a one-point lead into a 35-27 nonleague football victory over Carlsbad to spoil the Lancers’ homecoming.

Holding just a 21-20 lead after Collin Riccitelli’s second field goal of the game, Rancho Bernardo (4-1) went on 80-yard TD drives capped off by Kaelan Pestano’s 1-yard run and another 1-yard run by quarterback Mark Salazar to put the game away and improve to 9-4 in the series against Carlsbad (2-3).

Thanks to a botched punt play, Carlsbad took over in Broncos territory and wound up scoring on Shea Morales’ 8-yard TD pass to Kellen Peet with 3:37 to go to keep the Lancers close.

Carlsbad’s last drive ended on a pair of snaps over the quarterback’s head.

Junior running back Milan Grice of Rancho Bernardo wound up with 22 carries for 122 yards while also catching a 38-yard TD pass as the Broncos rushed for 147 yards after halftime and 199 yards for the game.

After Rancho Bernardo, the San Diego Section Division II runner-up last season, opened the scoring with Salazar’s 1-yard run, the Lancers turned a pair of punt muffs into Riccitelli’s 34-yard field goal and Morales’ 15-yard run for a 10-7 lead.

But the Broncos went on an 11-play, 80-yard drive capped by Anthony Barnum’s 4-yard TD run and a seven-play, 80-yard drive that Grice finished with a 38-yard TD toss from Salazar for a 21-10 lead.

Not to be outdone, Carlsbad got a lucky break on Morales’ long pass that deflected off Peet and a pair of Broncos defenders right to Ramon Sanchez for a 56-yard TD with 11.3 seconds left before halftime, cutting the deficit to 21-17.
