After going winless last season, Komets clinch Central League title

Kearny's Takoda Browne (shown in an earlier game) ran for 230 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Komets.

Kearny managed a complete turnaround this season.

Takoda Browne ran for 230 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Komets to a 21-14 win over host Clairemont in the teams’ Central League finale on Friday, giving Kearny the league title a year after it went winless.

The title was the first for the Komets (5-5, 4-0 Central League) since 2011. In the three intervening seasons, they compiled a combined 3-28 record, including an 0-10 mark last year.

They opened this season with a win over San Ysidro but then dropped five straight before rebounding to go undefeated in league.

With the score tied at 14 on Friday, Browne’s 3-yard scoring run late in the third quarter provided the difference. Clairemont staged a late comeback attempt, but the Komets defense forced its fourth turnover of the night — an interception in the final minute — to secure the win.

Clairemont (4-6, 1-3) lost to Kearny for the first time in four games. Dylan Suitts led the Chieftains with 79 rushing yards and Nick DiCarlo added 56.

The teams went into the half tied at 14. Clairemont took the lead on DiCarlo’s TD pass to Dylan Irwin, and the Komets countered with scoring runs from Browne and Treshaun Gray before Suitts’ 3-yard TD run evened the score.

Kearny could have won more easily but had five touchdowns nullified by penalty in the game. In all, the Komets were flagged 16 times for 162 yards.
