CHULA VISTA Senior Angelo Trujillo threw three touchdown passes and the Castle Park defense pitched a shutout to lead the Trojans to a 36-0 win over visiting Monte Vista in the opening round of the San Diego Section Division IV playoffs Friday.
With its fourth straight victory, sixth-seeded Castle Park (7-4) set up a rematch at third-seeded Bishop's in the quarterfinals Friday. The Knights eliminated the Trojans, this year’s Metro Pacific League champions, in last season’s semifinals.
“We played together as a team, and we came out with the win. That feels good,” Trujillo said, adding that he’s eager to face Bishops again.
“It’s going to be great game. I’m looking forward to it.”
No. 11 Monte Vista (2-9) lost its fifth straight.
The Trojans blew the game open with a 20-point second quarter and took a 29-0 lead into the half.
Senior Miguel Flores, who ran for a game-high 85 yards and two scores, had a 10-yard touchdown run in the quarter and junior Charles Tolbert caught scoring passes of 72 and 43 yards from Trujillo.
The senior quarterback, who threw for 229 yards, now has 20 touchdown passes on the season.
The Monarchs gained 104 yards before the break, but 89 of those came on two plays — a 40-yard run by senior Jacob Jardim and a 49-yard pass from sophomore Dennis Dahlin to senior Tre Owens.
They earned just five first downs in the game and were stopped on fourth down six times.
