Torrey Pines quarterback Caden Kelley (shown in an earlier game) drove the Falcons to the winning touchdown against Olympian.
Torrey Pines High appeared to be headed to a win over visiting Olympian in the first round of the CIF Division I playoffs on Friday night when quarterback Caden Kelley hooked up with Scotty Gange and Michael Gadinas on second-quarter touchdown passes of 76 and 21 yards.
Then it appeared they weren't when QB Garry Cannon took over the game in the second half and threw scoring passes of 7 and 8 yards to Paul Thompson.
But it turned out to be the Falcons' night, after all.
Kelley drove Torrey Pines down the field to win it 21-14 when Jacob Montes scored the deciding touchdown on a 1-yard run with 1:26 remaining. Beau Morgan put the capper on the victory when he pounced on a fumble at midfield after Cannon's 13th completion of the night to Thompson in the closing seconds.
Torrey Pines earned a No. 6 seed and a home playoff game despite winning only three regular-season games because it played one of the county's toughest schedules.
The Falcons, with a fourth win under their belts, will visit third-seeded El Camino next week.
The Eagles ,who came into the game with a 5-5 record. appeared to be driving toward a go-ahead touchdown with the score tied at 0-0 when Cannon broke off a12-yard run and passed 17 yards to Trey Curry for a first down at the Torrey Pines 25 in the second quarter.
But the Falcons' Ty Helfrich came up with a fumble recovery with 3:59 left in the half and, three plays later, Kelley found Gange open past the Olympian secondary for 76 yards for the first score of the game.
Helfrich then stopped Cannon on a third-down quarterback draw, forcing a punt which, resulted in a 21-yard Kelley-to-tight end Gadinis scoring pass with 49 seconds left in the half that made it 14-0 at the half.
Olympian cut the lead to 14-7 with 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter on Cannon's 7-yard TD pass to Thompson, who made a one-handed grab in the left corner.
And Olympian tied it with his send touchdown aerial to Thompson.
