Cougars come from behind to defeat Grossmont second time this season

Steele Canyon huddles as a team before the Cougars' stunning win over Grossmont.

Just over a month ago, Steele Canyon and Grossmont faced each other in a tough Grossmont Hills League game that was won by Steele Canyon on a last-second touchdown.

Apparently, the Cougars did not run out of magic after the first meeting. Down 28-0 at half, the Cougars outscored the Foothillers 39-7 in the second half to win 39-35 and advance to the Division I semifinals.

In the first half, it was the Foothillers’ offense that was clicking.

Grossmont scored TDs on four of its five possessions in the first half thanks in large part to the arm of quarterback Hunter Gaines, who threw three touchdown passes in the first half — two to wide receiver Domonique Guevara and one to wide receiver Khaleed Davis to jump out to a 21-0 lead.

The Foothillers weren’t done. With only 29 seconds left in the half, a 5-yard Jake Harr TD run made it 28-0 Foothillers at the break.

But the second half was all Cougars, who scored 32 unanswered points to end the game and steal the victory. Running back Pierre Alexander scored on TD runs of 8 and 9 yards, and quarterback Thomas Fishburne added a 9-yard rushing TD.

Just like last week’s first-round playoff victory, Steele Canyon’s special teams came up big when the game mattered most.

With just minutes left in the game, the Cougars took their first lead of the game when a blocked punt deep in Grossmont territory was recovered by Mikel Oliver in the end zone to give Steele Canyon the lead.

Grossmont’s Haily Mary pass in the final minute was batted down in the end zone.
