WESTVIEW at FALLBROOK
Kyle Williams, who guided Fallbrook to back-to-back 7-5 finishes, is the new coach at Westview. He has plenty of firepower to work with in returning QB Beau Nelson, who threw for 1,975 yards, and RB AJ Leonard, who rushed for 1,205 yards. The defense is anchored by MLB Joe Bennett and CB Emeka Anyanwu. Bob Burt, at 74 years young, takes over at Fallbrook. He has more than 209 wins as a high school coach, including a Southern Section championship at Temescal Canyon in 1995. He also has 49 wins as a college coach.
Prediction: Westview 31, Fallbrook 17
BONITA VISTA at POWAY
The Barons went 12-3 last season, losing the state Division IV-AA title game to Hanford. QB Anthony Posada, who threw for 2,269 yards, returns. SS Santiago DeArmas anchors the defense. Poway went 6-6 last season, losing in the section Division I quarterfinals.
Prediction: Bonita Vista 24, Poway 17
ESCONDIDO at MISSION BAY
Jud Bordman takes over a team that has gone 5-26 over the last three seasons. QB Kellen McCoy returns to lead a power running game. Mission Bay finished 10-3 last year, losing to Bonita Vista in the section Division III title game.
Prediction: Mission Bay 31, Escondido 14
GROSSMONT at MORSE
QB Hunter Gaines, who threw for 2,389 yards, and WR Domonique Guevara, who had 32 catches for 903 yards, return to lead the Grossmont offense. LB Nate Tiapula (112 tackles) and DB Riley Havird (85 tackles), anchor the defense. Markus Turner, who accounted for nearly 3,000 yards from scrimmage, leads Morse.
Prediction: Grossmont 34, Morse 14
LA JOLLA at MONTGOMERY
Matt Morrison takes over as coach of the Vikings after a 3-8 season. The offense is inexperienced, but the defense returns several top players, including MLB Daniel McColl (68 tackles) and DE Andrew Mitchell (54). Montgomery struggled to a 2-8 finish, but the Aztecs have a new coach in Sanjevi Subbiah and some defensive firepower back in LB Felipe Muro (91 tackles) and OLB Anthony Bugarin (69).
Prediction: La Jolla 28, Montgomery 14
OTAY RANCH at Mt. CARMEL
Otay Ranch must replace its offense but has solid defenders back in MLB Nick Sandoval (96 tackles) and OLB Fenuki Kauvaka (62). Mt. Carmel must replace most of an offense that averaged 406 yards. RB Isaiah Tate and WR T.J. Sullivan provide some spark.
Prediction: Mt. Carmel 24, Otay Ranch 17
SERRA at LINCOLN
Serra was 1-9 and gave up 494 points. Lincoln was 2-8 but beat Serra 60-0. The Hornets return two key offensive weapons in QB Asante Hartzog and RB Micah Edwards. FS Kayvon Brown (99 tackles) and LB Lamont Williams (74) anchor the defense.
Prediction: Lincoln 38, Serra 14
VALHALLA at SCRIPPS RANCH
Valhalla is coming off a 9-3 season and a loss to Mt. Carmel in the section Division III semifinals. Scripps Ranch was 4-7, but averaged nearly 28 points.
Prediction: Valhalla 27, Scripps Ranch 20
RANCHO BERNARDO at EASTLAKE
Ranch Bernardo, the state Division III-A champ, returns 10 offensive starters, three on defense and All-America PK Matt Araiza. QB Mark Salazar threw for 2,248 yards, and RB Milan Grice ran for 1,872. Eastlake finished 5-6 and has a new coach in Dean Tropp. The offense is run oriented while OLBs Jae Vitin (66 tackles) and Declan Fernandez (53) lead the defense.
Prediction: Rancho Bernardo 34, Eastlake 21
SAN YSIDRO at CORONADO
San Ysidro finished 0-9, scoring just 68 points. Coronado had a great run in ’15, going 10-5, losing in the state Division IV-AA title game. QB Briley Knight returns to run the offense. The defense returns several key pieces, including Hugo Shirey, Sullivan Alexander and Wyatt Montague.
Prediction: Coronado 34, San Ysidro 13
