'Tough' running sparks Mar Vista over University City

Mar Vista's Marcelino Maclang rushes during the third quarter.

Sometimes numbers really don’t tell the whole story.

Mar Vista quarterback Jacob Beck carried the football only seven times against host University City on Friday night for a net gain of seven yards.

Nothing special, right?

Three of those carries went for touchdowns of 2, 2 and 1 yard as the Mariners (3-2) stunned previously unbeaten University City 28-21.

“We ran tough,” was how Beck, a senior, described Mar Vista’s control of the clock, adding, “our defense was unbelievable.”

The Mariners gobbled up 206 yards on the ground, including a 74-yard run by Marcelino Maclang that set up one of those 2-yard runs by Beck late in the second quarter. Maclang finished with 104 yards.

Beck passed for only 34 yards but kept drives alive in the second half with key tosses that resulted in a pair of first downs.

And the defense completely shut down the Centurions’ rushing game, holding UC (4-1) to a net of four yards rushing. Gunnar Gray completed 23 of 31 passes, including the first 13 of the second half, but his 342 yards and three touchdowns went for naught.

Although Casey Granfors caught TD passes of 3 and 19 yards — the latter with 1:35 to give UC a wisp of a chance — an onside kick was covered and the Mariners prevailed.

“Greg Raby, our defensive coordinator, had a great game plan,” said Mar Vista coach Tyler Arciaga. “They beat a team we lost to (Monte Vista) and they were scoring like 40 or 45 points a game.

“We did it even though we have some major injuries — a great team win.”
