A strong first-quarter showing by the Castle Park High football team went for naught Friday night as San Pasqual used a 32-point second period as a springboard for another romp.

The Golden Eagles rolled to a 39-0 nonleague victory before a happy homecoming crowd at Golden Eagle Stadium. The win was San Pasqual’s third straight involving a running clock, with the Eagles winning their last three by a combined 137-0 score.

Senior quarterback Westin Erdman passed for one touchdown and ran for two more during the second-quarter outburst, while senior defensive back Josh Nolan intercepted a pair of passes to keep the Trojans at bay.

“We needed the momentum,” Nolan said of his first pick. “I saw it coming, and I had to make the play.

“We practiced hard this week and we played harder.”

Castle Park (0-6), making the trip north from the Metro Pacific League, has lost eight straight games going back to last season. The outmanned Trojans suited up only 25 players, while the Golden Eagles (4-2) called up 21 junior varsity players for the varsity game.

Like many South Bay teams, Castle Park has no JV squad.

“They came out and fought, but I think they lost a little emotion after Josh’s interception in the end zone,” San Pasqual coach Tony Corley said.

The Trojans had an impressive offensive series to begin the game, converting a pair of fourth downs while advancing from their own 25-yard line to the San Pasqual 20 using 13 plays. Nolan put an end to the visitors’ opening possession by snaring his first interception in the end zone. The hosts then drove 82 yards in 11 plays before scoring on the first play of the second period on a 24-yard pass from Erdman to Cameron Young.

The rout was on, bringing back 20-year-old memories of San Pasqual’s 47-13 win over Castle Park in the 1997 San Diego Section Division II championship game at Qualcomm Stadium.
